Oulu has joined a group of the most popular international congress destinations in Finland
Oulu is among the best international congress destinations in Finland
According to the statistics of the Oulu’s convention and marketing unit-Oulu Convention Bureau, the city, together with Espoo, was recognised as the third most popular international congress destination last year. Arranged events brought to Oulu approximately 7 million euro.
Attracting meetings of different sizes is a challenging task, as competition on this market is very tight. Last year 53 congresses were organized in Oulu, which is a great achievement.
Five years ago, only 24 such events took place in our city and the goal of reaching more than 50 seemed beyond any belief at that time. Congress organizers contributed greatly to this success.
” Arranging a conference takes a lot of time and effort. It is often a few years of planning to have a successful event,’’ says Riina Aikio, OCB Project Coordinator. ” Taking the city’s size and network of service providers into consideration, Oulu has the potential to host even more meetings, regardless of how big or small they may be,’’ she continues. OCB has also introduced a selection of digital tools, which make work faster and more effective.
An average congress guest spends approximately 4-5 times more money than tourists during their visits. Only last year 100,000 events participants left in Finland about 166 million euro. Apart from this economic impact, every arranged congress strengthens city’s international image, which sends an important message to the world.
Oulu has so much to offer. With the help of congresses, media attention is attracted to the region. International meetings prove an excellent addition to marketing strategies and provide a platform for establishing new connections and developing projects. This is also important when it comes to targeting students and well-qualified workforce, adds Aikio.
According to Helena Pikkarainen, OCB Senior Advisor, a subject matter of a congress is the most important for a guest. However, Oulu’s assets such as strong position of its scientific community and expertise in many fields are also worth mentioning. Additionally, meetings attendees come to Oulu looking for a taste of northern culture. OCB’s “Northern Experience” program provides them with unforgettable visits and free-time activities.
By means of congresses, a university-based research unit, the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC), promotes own activities within an international academic community. “Congresses attract leading researchers who come to Oulu to learn more about CWC and the way it operates. This is also how we can promote Oulu’s know-how and establish new contacts for future cooperation,” says Professor of Communications Engineering Matti Latva-aho from the University of Oulu.
CWC is now focusing on the European Conference on Networks and Communications 2017 (EuCNC ), which will take place on 12-15 June in Oulu. It will be the 26th edition of a successful series of a technical and scientific conference in the area of Telecommunications. This event will gather about 500 attendees; the key actors from the ICT sector and other participants from all over the world.
